Devil's Tower
Devil's Tower, known as Mato Tipila or Bear Lodge to the Lakota and Tso-aa to the Kiowa, is a sacred geological formation in northeastern Wyoming and the first declared United States National Monument. In the oral traditions of over twenty Native American tribes including the Lakota, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Crow, and Arapaho, this 1,267-foot monolith of striated igneous rock is a living spiritual being central to creation narratives. The most widespread legend tells of seven young girls chased by a giant bear who climbed onto a low rock and prayed for deliverance. The Great Spirit caused the rock to
