Kakungu
Kakungu is a powerful ancestral spirit of the Suku people of southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo, regarded as the most authoritative figure in the mukanda initiation tradition. Far more than a ceremonial mask or ritual prop, Kakungu is believed to embody an actual ancestral spirit whose presence oversees the transition of boys into adulthood. Entering ritual spaces as a guardian, healer, and symbol of continuity between the living and their ancestors, Kakungu is perceived by the community as an active spiritual being entrusted with the power to protect, discipline, and restore balance.
