Druk (Thunder Dragon of Bhutan)
The Druk (Thunder Dragon) is Bhutan's national symbol, giving the country its name Druk Yul ('Land of the Thunder Dragon'). The 12th-century Tibetan master Tsangpa Gyare heard thunder thrice while founding Ralung Monastery and named his Drukpa Kagyu lineage after it; the dragon later became Bhutan's emblem. The Druk commands storms — its roar is thunder, its serpentine body lightning.
