Duende (Forest Guardian)
El Duende of Ecuadorian folklore is a small forest spirit, a wrinkled little man in a broad hat and pointed shoes who guards forests and highlands while playing tricks, stealing food, and leading animals astray. He is said to lure disobedient children into the woods, where offending him can make one lose one's way forever, and he collects children's nail clippings as a protective charm.
