Duende (Forest Guardian)
Peruvian duende belief blends Quechua and Aymara tradition with Spanish colonial influence. In the Amazon the duende is close to the chullachaqui, a shapeshifting jungle spirit that guards the forest and misleads hunters; in the highlands it takes on mountain-spirit traits, watching over fields and communities. Parents use the figure to keep children from wandering alone in the bush.
