Dutchman
The Dutchman is one of the most feared jumbies in Guyanese folklore, a malevolent spirit associated with the silk cotton trees (Ceiba pentandra) known throughout the country as "Dutchman trees." These massive trees are believed to be haunted by the spirits of Dutch colonizers from the 17th and 18th centuries who were cruel to their slaves and were condemned to guard the treasures they buried beneath the roots. The legend holds that any person who climbs, cuts, or damages a silk cotton tree will suffer terrible consequences, including violent falls, broken necks, severe illness, or even death.
