El Cucuy
El Cucuy is a distinct Mexican and Mexican-American variant of the bogeyman legend, particularly prevalent among Chicano families in the US Southwest. Unlike the more generic El Coco, El Cucuy is specifically described as a small, hairy, goblin-like creature who lives under children's beds or in dark closets, waiting to grab ankles or drag away children who refuse to sleep. Some accounts describe him with red or yellow eyes, long claws, and a mischievous grin. The legend serves dual purposes: as a parenting tool to enforce bedtime and as a cultural rite of passage where children learn to face
