El Duende del Tabaco (The Tobacco Goblin) is a mischievous spirit from Cuban folklore that haunts the tobacco curing houses and drying barns of Pinar del Río, the heart of Cuba's finest tobacco region. In Cuban rural tradition, this duende is a small, elf-like being that both protects and torments tobacco workers. It is said to have existed since the time of the Taíno people, who believed tobacco was a sacred plant with its own protective spirit.
