El Jinete Sin Cabeza
El Jinete Sin Cabeza (The Headless Horseman) is a Hispanic variant of the headless horseman legend from the Rio Grande Valley and northern Mexico. Unlike the more famous Ichabod Crane version, this specter is specifically rooted in the borderlands' history of conflict. He is said to be the ghost of a Spanish conquistador or Mexican rancher who lost his head in battle — either during the Mexican War of Independence or the Mexican-American War. He rides a black horse through the moonlit mesquite at midnight, carrying his severed head under his arm. His appearance is a fearsome omen: to see him f
