Elk (wapiti) are not native to Guatemala or the Maya lowlands, so this 'Elk Trickster' is a template artifact. Maya tradition does know deer and other forest animals as characters of transition in tales, and hunters observe rules of restraint in taking game. The entry should be read as a deer-forest trickster motif mislabeled with 'elk,' not an attested Maya figure.
