Etiäinen

spirit · Finland · Nordic

Etiäinen is a Finnish fetch/doppelgänger spirit: an image that goes ahead of a person, performing actions the person later repeats (door closing, shadow seen). Also a premonitory feeling of impending events, often death. Spontaneous and involuntary unlike clairvoyance. Ganander (1789), Krohn documented it. Cognate with Norwegian vardøger, Swedish vörðr. Modern Finnish 'etiäinen' means premonition.
