Fata

fairy · Italy · Mediterranean

The Fata is the fairy-fate figure of Italian tradition, descended from the Latin Fatae and the Roman Parcae. A beautiful woman in courtly gown with a magic wand, she acts as godmother and fate-weaver, bestowing gifts at a child's birth; vain and proud, she punishes slights with curses. She inhabits forests, wells and crossroads, surviving today in the Fata Turchina of Pinocchio.
