Fire Stealing Bird
In the Polynesian origin-of-fire cycle the keeper of fire is a little bird, most famously the ʻalae ʻula (Hawaiian mudhen), whose flock roasted bananas over secret fires while humans ate their food raw. When the demigod Māui seized the bird and demanded its secret, it sent him rubbing taro stalks and ti leaves until it was forced to reveal the true fire-drill of rubbing dry sticks together. Furious at the bird's tricks, Māui scorched its forehead, and the mudhen still wears the red mark on its head to this day.
