Flat Pipe
The Flat Pipe is the most sacred ceremonial object of the Arapaho people, central to their creation story and spiritual life. In the beginning, a man carrying a Flat Pipe walked on the primordial waters—the pipe itself was integral to creation. The Flat Pipe was used by the Flat Pipe Creator to summon trees and animals, and was transformed into a Red-headed Duck to help dive for mud. In historical times, the Flat Pipe bundle was kept by a designated keeper and brought out for the Sun Dance and other major ceremonies. The pipe represents the covenant between the Arapaho people and their Creator
