Forest Person
The Forest Person of Pacific Northwest tradition is Kushtaka (Kooshdaa kaa), the 'land otter man' of the Tlingit and neighboring peoples whose range extends from southeast Alaska into Canada. A shapeshifter straddling human and animal, it is tied to drowning: Kushtaka may rescue or transform the souls of the drowned. Similar beings appear among the Tsimshian and Dena'ina.
