Fureytha
Fureytha are shimmering reef spirits in Maldivian folklore — luminous, protective water beings inhabiting coral reefs and lagoons. They embody the fragile beauty of the marine ecosystem and guide or warn fishermen. Playful and protective, they emphasize reef preservation. Part of pre-Islamic Maldivian animist tradition, later syncretized. Documented in Maldivian oral narratives.
