Fylgja

spirit · Sweden · Nordic

The Fylgja is a guardian spirit that accompanies a person throughout their life, acting as a mirror of their soul and a harbinger of their fate. In Swedish folklore, every person is born with a Fylgja, usually in the form of an animal that matches the person's temperament (e.g., a bear for a strong leader, a fox for a cunning trickster). The Fylgja is not always seen, but it often appears in dreams or as a fleeting glimpse in the corner of the eye. Its most critical role is appearing shortly before a person's death, warning them of the coming end
