Gaayhllga Jaad Flood Tide Woman Haida
Gaayhllga Jaad, the Flood Tide Woman, belongs to the Haida tradition of a great deluge. In the story told by Chief Young of Haida Gwaii, a woman wrapped in an unfamiliar fur cape was mocked by children; as she sat by the shore the water rose, sweeping away villages and scattering the survivors on crude rafts. Geologists read the tale as a distant memory of post-glacial sea-level rise.
