Galamani

serpent · Mali · West Africa

Galamani is the sacred serpent of the Fulani epic of Silamaka and Pullori, the legendary heroes of the Macina region of Mali. When Silamaka consulted a geomancer to gain invulnerability against the Bambara king Da Monzon Diarra, he was told he must first capture the sacred serpent Galamani alive. With his companion Pullori's help, Silamaka succeeded where many had failed, capturing the serpent and fashioning a protective belt from it. Galamani represents the invulnerability charm and the magical power inherent in the natural world that heroes must master before they can achieve greatness
