Kachikally Sacred Crocodiles

animal · Gambia · West Africa

The Kachikally Sacred Crocodiles are not ordinary reptiles but are considered spiritual beings and fertility spirits in Mandinka folklore of The Gambia. The sacred crocodile pool of Kachikally in Bakau, Gambia, is one of three such sacred pools in the country (alongside Folonko in Kartong and Berending), each inhabited by Nile crocodiles believed to possess spiritual power. According to Gambian tradition, these crocodiles are sacred manifestations of ancestral spirits and serve as fertility totems for the Bojang clan, who serve as their traditional custodians.
