Hindu divine eagle - King OF Birds, mount (vahana) of Vishnu. Sanskrit: 'Garuḍa' from 'gṛ' (to swallow/devour). Half-Brother of Aruna (sun's charioteer). Birth: from egg of Vinata (Kaśyapa's wife). Her sister Kadru mothered Nagas (serpents). Rivalry: Kadru tricked Vinata into slavery. VOW: Garuda would free her by earning Amrita (nectar of immortality) for the serpents. HE Stole it from gods, waged war on Indra and all devas, Defeated them. Vishnu impressed, granted Immortality before he even got the nectar. In gratitude, became Vishnu's eternal mount.
