//Gaunab

deity · Namibia · Southern Africa

//Gaunab (Gaunab) is the Khoikhoi malevolent deity of death, sickness, and misfortune, personifying darkness and the west. He eternally battles the creator Tsui-//Goab, who wounded his knees in their wrestling match. The lunar cycle reflects their conflict: waning moon is //Gaunab's temporary victory, new crescent marks Tsui-//Goab's return. Documented by Theophilus Hahn (1881) and later scholars.
