Gbeni/Gbini

spirit · Sierra Leone · West Africa

Gbeni (Gbini) is the chief masker associated with the men's Poro society among the Mende of Sierra Leone. He wears a long cape of undyed raffia and raffia leggings; the broad cylindrical flat-topped headpiece is decorated with animal skin, cowrie shells and mirrors, with a small gap at the front through which he sees. A panel hangs from the collar over the chest and midriff (generally faced with leopard skin and ornamented with cowries). At the back, small wooden panels inscribed with sentences from the Qur'an are suspended and knock together as he moves.
