Gikuyu
Gikuyu is the first man and founding ancestor of the Kikuyu people. According to tradition, Ngai (the supreme god) created Gikuyu and took him to the summit of Mount Kenya (Kirinyaga). From this sacred vantage point, Ngai showed Gikuyu the beautiful highlands below and instructed him to build his homestead at Mukurwe wa Gathanga, where many mugumo (wild fig) trees grew. Ngai gave Gikuyu the land with its rivers, forests, and animals, establishing a covenant. At Mukurwe wa Gathanga, Gikuyu found Mumbi, the first woman, who became his wife.
