Great Fisher

spirit-animal · United States · North America

The Great Fisher (Ojiig) is a heroic animal spirit from Ojibwe mythology who freed the summer birds from the underwater panther Mishipeshu's cave, bringing summer back to the world. Pursued by the enraged Mishipeshu, Fisher was lifted into the sky by spirits and transformed into the constellation known as Ojiig — the Big Dipper. Each year, when the constellation appears in the northern sky, it signals the return of spring. The Great Fisher is remembered as a selfless hero who sacrificed his freedom for the good of all creatures
