The Great Whale of Creation

animal · East Timor · Southeast Asia

In Kemak creation mythology from the Atsabe region of East Timor, a colossal cosmic whale caused a devastating flood that reshaped the world. According to the myth, the immense whale leaped so high from the ocean that when it crashed back down, it drove all the waters to rise to the mountaintops, covering nearly all land. This deluge marked the third great flood in Timorese cosmology. The ancestors survived by climbing to the peak of Mount Ramelau (Lame Lau), where they communed with God. The whale was eventually slain with sacred spears and swords given by God
