Gygrid

giant · Norway · Nordic

Not independently attested in folklore literature. No Norwegian tradition names a giantess 'Gygrid'; the real terms are gyger (singular) and gygjer (plural), from Old Norse gygr, and appear in place names such as Gygra. 'Gygrid' is better known as the Norwegian translation of the Harry Potter character Hagrid. The invented plural 'gygrier' and mountain lore are unfounded.
