Haetae
Haetae (해태) is the Korean chimera of justice and fire control, usually a lion-bodied, horned, scale-covered beast that swallows fire. It distinguishes right from wrong, goring the guilty, and protects against fire and calamity, which is why its statues guard palaces, government buildings, and Seoul's streets, including near the National Assembly. It descends from the Chinese xiezhi tradition.
