Haltija (or haltia) is a class of guardian spirits in Finnish mythology that inhabit and protect specific places, living beings, and natural features. Unlike the major deities known as jumala who rule over broad concepts like water or forest, haltijas are localized spirits governing a specific lake, tree, stone, homestead, or even a person's wellbeing. The word derives from Proto-Norse meaning 'ruler' or 'holder.'
