A young Maori warrior from the Rotorua region who was captured by the bird-woman Kurangaituku. Hatupatu was kept prisoner in her cave, but he cleverly bided his time and escaped. When Kurangaituku pursued him, he ran across the rugged volcanic landscape of the central North Island. The bird-woman was gaining on him until Hatupatu called upon the gods and reached the hot springs and geysers of Rotorua.
