Hawk Guardian of Kikuyu

guardian · Kenya · East Africa

Hawks and other raptors are honored among the Kikuyu (Agikuyu) of Kenya as messengers of Ngai, the supreme deity whose dwelling is Kirinyaga (Mount Kenya). Their flight is read as a sign of Ngai's watch over the land, and hawk feathers appear in the regalia of ritual leaders. The 'Hawk Guardian' is a composite personification of these beliefs, not a figure with one fixed name in Kikuyu sources.
