Headless Horseman
The Headless Horseman is the ghostly Hessian soldier of Washington Irving's 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' (1820), a figure of Dutch-American folklore of the Hudson Valley. He rides at night with his head carried on his saddle, hurling it at the fleeing Ichabod Crane; he is a classic of American, not Native American, literature.
