Helhest
Helhest ('Hell-horse') is the three-legged horse of Danish folk belief, a death-omen that haunted churchyards. It was said to drag itself around the church at night, and whoever saw it or heard it whinny would die within the year. Old accounts tie the creature to a horse or sacrificial beast buried alive beneath a church or graveyard; stories cluster at Aarhus, Roskilde, and other towns.
