Hestmannen (the Horseman) is a troll from Nordland folklore, the wild son of Vågakallen of Lofoten. Hestmannen was known for his uncontrollable temper and wild riding. According to legend, he pursued Lekamøya (the Leka Maid) across Vestfjorden on horseback, intending to capture her. As the sun rose, he shot an arrow at her — but Skarsfjellgubben threw his hat in the way, deflecting the arrow. The arrow pierced the hat, creating the famous hole through Torghatten mountain.
