Heyoka
The heyoka (heyókȟa) is the sacred clown and contrary of Lakota tradition, a role taken only by those who have dreamed of the thunder-beings, Wakíŋyaŋ. Heyokas act backwards and use satire and shocking behavior to mirror a community's doubts, fears, and vanities, functioning as social critics and spiritual teachers who maintain balance.
