Hine-nui-te-po
The goddess of death, night, and the underworld. Originally Hine-titama (the Dawn Maiden), daughter of Tane Mahuta and Hineahuone. When Hine-titama discovered that Tane was also her father, she fled in shame to the underworld, transforming into Hine-nui-te-po, the goddess of death. She guards the entrance to the underworld and receives the spirits of the dead. The demigod Maui attempted to conquer death by crawling through her body, but a bird's laughter woke her and she crushed him between her obsidian teeth, ensuring that death would remain permanent for all humanity
