Horagalles

deity · Norway · Sami

Horagalles is the thunder god in Sami shamanism, one of the most powerful deities in the Sami pantheon. His name likely means 'Thor-man' (from Norse Thor and Sami galles 'old man'), showing Norse influence, though he has deep indigenous roots called Tiermes or Dierpmis among eastern and northern Sami. He rules over thunder and lightning, the rainbow (his bow), weather, oceans, lakes, and human life, health, and well-being. He is depicted on shaman drums with a hammer or two crossed hammers — with one hammer he makes thunder and lightning, with the other he withdraws them to prevent harm. Idols
