The legendary first king and discoverer of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). According to tradition, Hotu Matu'a lived in the mythical land of Hiva, which was sinking beneath the ocean. A prophet named Hau Maka appeared in his dream and directed him to search for a new island called Rapa Nui.
