The legendary first king and discoverer of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). According to tradition, Hotu Matu'a lived in the mythical land of Hiva, which was sinking beneath the ocean. A prophet named Hau Maka appeared in his dream and directed him to search for a new island called Rapa Nui. Seven explorers were sent ahead, found the uninhabited island, and returned with their report. Hotu Matu'a then sailed with two large canoes carrying approximately a hundred people, including his wife, children, and essential plants and animals. They landed at Anakena Beach.
