Humbaba, originally known as Huwawa in Sumerian, is a fearsome giant and ogre-like figure from Mesopotamian mythology, best known as the divinely appointed guardian of the Cedar Forest in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Appointed by the god Enlil to protect the sacred cedars, Humbaba was a terrifying being whose voice was the Deluge, his mouth was fire, his breath was death.
