Ifrit (ʿIfrīt)
The ifrit, spelled variously ifrit and afrit, is a mighty class of rebellious fire-jinn renowned for guile and supernatural power. It is first met in the Qur'anic tale of the throne of Sheba, where an ifrit of the jinn volunteers to bring it in an instant. Folk tradition pictures the ifrit as a towering winged being of smoke and flame dwelling in ruins and desolate wastes.
