Ilmatar

spirit · Finland · Nordic

Ilmatar (Luonnotar, 'Airess') is the Finnish virgin air spirit in Kalevala, mother of Väinämöinen. Drifts 700 years in primordial ocean until duck lays eggs on her knee; eggs form sky, earth, celestial bodies. Not a creator in pre-Kalevala runic songs; Lönnrot elevated her from White Karelian 'oldest of women'. Sibelius's Luonnotar (1913) immortalized her.
