Asiman

shapeshifter · Ivory Coast · West Africa

The asiman is the vampire-witch figure known to the Akan of Côte d'Ivoire and, above all, documented among the Fon of Dahomey: a woman who seems ordinary by day but at night sheds her body to fly as a corpse-candle or ball of light, drinking blood from the sleeping, then turning to animal shape. Regional Akan equivalents include the obayifo and the Ewe adze.
