Jack-o'-Lantern
In African American folklore, Jack-o'-Lantern (also called Jacky-My-Lantern) is a wandering spirit who carries a flickering light through the swamps at night, luring travelers from the safety of the road into treacherous marshland. According to Uncle Remus tales collected by Joel Chandler Harris, Jacky-My-Lantern was once a man who made a deal with the Devil and was cursed to wander the earth with only a lantern made from a hollowed turnip and a coal of fire, never finding rest. When travelers see the bobbing light and follow it, hoping to reach shelter, they soon find themselves sinking into
