Giants (Jætter)
Jætter (ON jötnar) are a primordial race in Norse/Danish tradition, not mere giants. Descend from Ymir, dwell in Jötunheimr, ancestors of Odin and Thor. Terms: risi, þurs, troll (male), gýgr (female). Embody chaotic nature and wisdom; gods seek them for secret knowledge. Later folklore demonised them as dim-witted mountain-dwellers turned to stone by sun.
