Jangseung
Jangseung are Korea's village guardian totem poles, carved from wood or stone and erected at village entrances, roads, and temple boundaries to mark the community's edge and drive away harmful spirits, especially those carrying epidemics. Usually placed in male–female pairs such as Cheonhadaejanggun (Heavenly Great General) and Jihayeojanggun (Earthly Female General), they were worshipped as village tutelary deities and honored at the annual jangseungje rite around the first full moon. Recorded since the Silla and Goryeo periods, most surviving jangseung date to the late Joseon dynasty.
