Jengu

water-spirit · Cameroon · Central Africa

Jengu (pl. miengu; Bakweri: liengu) are water spirits of the Sawabantu peoples of Cameroon — Duala, Bakweri, Limba, Bakoko, Oroko. They appear as beautiful mermaid-like beings with long hair and a distinctive gap-toothed grin. Miengu mediate between the living and ancestral spirits, bring good fortune, heal illness, and control aquatic fates.
