Jhelmaia (Camel)

animal · Kazakhstan · Central Asia

Jhelmaia (Zhel-maya, the 'wind camel') is a legendary camel of Kazakh folklore: an unnaturally fast, tireless steed of the steppe. A tale associates the wind-fast camel with Korkut Ata, who sent it racing across the land; it endures in Kazakh tradition as a symbol of loyalty, endurance, and the speed prized by nomads.
