Jumbie
Jumbie (jumbee) is a generic Caribbean term for malevolent spirits of the dead, widespread across Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, and the Lesser Antilles. Derived from Kongo nfumbi (ancestral ghost) and Akan duppy. They shape-shift into animals, haunt silk cotton trees, and are repelled by shoes, salt, or crossing water. Central to Obeah and Montserrat jumbie dances.
