Kópakonan is the Faroese variant of the selkie legend, a mythical seal-woman who sheds her sealskin to walk on land as a beautiful human. The story comes from the island of Kalsoy in the Faroe Islands, specifically the village of Mikladalur. According to the legend, a farmer from Mikladalur stole a selkie's sealskin while she danced on the shore, forcing her to marry him and bear his children.
