Kalu Devata, also known as the Black Prince or Kalu Kumaraya, is a fearsome river demon from Sri Lankan folklore, particularly associated with the Sinhalese Buddhist tradition. According to legend, he was originally a prince who attempted to usurp his father throne and, upon failing, committed suicide out of shame. Instead of finding peace in death, he was condemned to remain on earth as a malevolent demon, cursed to prey upon the living.
